Thousands of patients in our region benefit from the excellent, life-saving care provided in the Kessler Family Burn/Trauma Intensive Care Unit each year.
The Kessler Family Burn/Trauma ICU is a national model for burn and trauma care. Burn and trauma care are distinct specialties, but because of the similarities in the types and severity of injuries, the issues facing patients and staff often overlap. This specialized ICU makes care more efficient and effective by pairing dedicated teams of trauma and burn experts with the most sophisticated technology available.
This Intensive Care Unit is one component of two vital programs that provide comprehensive care and treatment to victims of trauma and burns. The Strong Regional Trauma Program is a New York State Regional Trauma Center, while the Strong Regional Burn Program is verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Burn Center. In both cases, a staff of expertly trained physicians and nurses is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide care to these patients on many levels and also offer educational programs for pre-hospital providers.
The Kessler Family Burn/ Trauma Intensive Care Unit itself occupies a footprint of about 19,000 square feet and contains 23 private rooms. Each room has rapid warming/ humidity capability (90˚ F/40% humidity) to help our patients in shock from their injuries maintain their body temperatures. The rooms were specifically designed to accommodate the equipment to not only treat patients, such as ventilators and dialysis machines, but those needed to perform bedside procedures. The monitoring systems are state-of-the-art, and there is wireless capability for laptop/computer order entry, as well as wireless communications for staff and charge nurses. Individualized nursing stations are outside of each room, so nurses can review monitors and enter information into the computer without ever losing sight of the patient.
Across time, our reputation for excellence has grown, as have our clinical volumes.
Proceeds from this year’s auction will benefit the thousands of patients with life threatening injuries that are treated in the Kessler Family Burn/ Trauma Intensive Care Unit.
